Destiny 2 Players Concerned About Rewards in DLC

Destiny 2 Players Concerned About Rewards in DLC

This week, Bungie gave Destiny 2 fans their first look at some of the new activities included in its upcoming Curse of Osiris DLC expansion. While Curse of Osiris is said to feature several core additions, from a new Raid Lair to new story missions, the focus of this week’s stream was on a new Public Event type and a new Adventure. Moreover, Bungie wanted to highlight how these new activities will be more rewarding than anything seen in Destiny 2’s base release.

Unfortunately, Bungie’s stream did little to convince Destiny 2 fans that the game’s rewards system has improved. While showcasing a new Public Event that sees fireteams unlocking areas of the Infinite Forest and completing some involved objectives, Bungie made it a point to say the activity would be more rewarding.

Then, when the fireteam completed the Heroic Public Event, two chests appeared and the player on-stream earned two Mercury Tokens and one Rare (Blue) Engram. Needless to say, this was a far cry from the rewarding activity that Bungie promised and left many players concerned.

It didn’t take long before the saying “Two tokens and a blue” became a meme within the Destiny 2 community and frustrations boiled up on forums, Twitter, and Reddit. Although these Curse of Osiris livestreams were supposed to show players the new content included in the DLC, many players hoped it would also show how the endgame rewards system is improving. Tokens have been a major point of contention for players and seeing that the new DLC is still reliant on them is unlikely to help Bungie’s case, especially when the upgrade is from 1 token (or 1/20th of an engram) to 2 tokens (1/10th of an engram).

To be fair, many content creators and media members had their own opportunities to play the new Public Event in Curse of Osiris and they had better results. Some received Exotic Engrams or Legendary Engrams, in addition to the Tokens. But it’s still hard not to be confused when Bungie says Curse of Osiris is more rewarding and then seeing two tokens and a blue engram drop.

With only one stream left, Bungie has a unique opportunity in front of itself. This final stream is reportedly focused on the new gear in Curse of Osiris, but if the development team doesn’t at least address some Quality of Life changes for Destiny 2 moving forward, they will have concluded a promotional blitz without really changing the status quo. No doubt some of Curse of Osiris sounds intriguing, but this add-on carries an additional cost, and Bungie needs to justify that. We’ll see what they bring to the table next week.

Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris releases December 5, 2017 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
