Why Pokemon GO is Giving You Extreme Weather Warnings

Why Pokemon GO is Giving You Extreme Weather Warnings

The Pokemon GO dynamic weather update is now here, providing players with bonuses and increased Pokemon spawns based on their local weather conditions. But unfortunately not all Pokemon GO players are having a good time with the new feature.

On social media, disgruntled Pokemon GO players have begun to complain that the game keeps giving them “extreme” weather warnings. The extreme weather warning explains that “Pokemon seem to dislike these conditions,” warning players that these conditions can be dangerous and that they should check their surroundings.

However, players say that the game is giving them these warnings even when no “extreme” weather is to be found, e.g on overcast or normally rainy days. Many players in places where “extreme” weather (such as heavy snowfall) is a regular occurrence are also upset because these warnings disable benefits from the weather system.

One player in Norway explained that there are constant warnings of avalanches though these are well-known and the places where avalanches occur are not lived in. Therefore, the locals are largely unaffected and should be able to enjoy the weather system as expected.

According to a new report, Pokemon GO will show an extreme weather warning if regional weather services issue a Level 3 (dangerous weather) or Level 4 (very dangerous weather) warning. It’s unclear exactly how Pokemon GO is gathering this regional weather data (e.g whether it’s from a website or some other licensed software), but it seems that this is not accurate enough.

Niantic may not have experience with every place on Earth (like that town in Norway, for example) and so the developer cannot be sure how players live. The developer will not know how locals can handle the weather and what measures are in place to ensure that Pokemon GO is able to be played safely, either.

Niantic may seem overly cautious but this is understandable. Pokemon GO players already find themselves in danger as is, by playing the game while driving or getting stranded in places they shouldn’t be in the first place. With the weather system, the likelihood of that happening even more is so much higher.

Moreover, Pokemon GO made headlines earlier this year when the game encouraged players to go outside during Hurricane Irma. Luckily, most players chose to stay out of harm’s way but with the new weather system offering players big benefits, some may ignore the risks and go outside anyway.

The new weather feature has not been live for long and so Niantic may well make some tweaks that improve things in the future. Unhappy players will have their fingers crossed that an update comes soon.

Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS devices.
