DB FighterZ Explains How Dragon Balls Work In-Game

Now that the forthcoming open beta for Dragon Ball FighterZ is right around the corner, fans of the fighting game are understandably on pins and needles in anticipation for the trial. Naturally, many will want to be as prepared as possible for battle when the beta goes live, so thankfully, the publisher Bandai Namco has now officially opened up to reveal how players will use Dragon Balls in the game.

According to a recent tweet from the company, Dragon Balls will be doled out to Dragon Ball FighterZ players through what is being called the “Shenron System.” After seven combos with specific hit counts–10 hits for the one-star ball, 30 hits for the three-star ball, and so on–are performed during the match, the mythological dragon Shenron will appear to grant a player one of four wishes. Apparently, the next player to land a combo will then have the wish granted, but it’s important to note that particulars on how exactly the wish gets granted are still somewhat murky.

Nevertheless, Bandai Namco has gone ahead and provided Dragon Ball FighterZ fans the rundown as to which wishes can be chosen, and how they will affect gameplay after being implemented. A player can either restore their current on-screen character to their full health, revive a lost ally to give them half their health back, boost one’s Ki gauge to the max, or become “immortal,” which grants 50% health restored and auto-restoration for the energy gauge.

On the surface, the Shenron System seems to be a really unique way to make the matches of Dragon Ball FighterZ more compelling, for it could not only give players who are winning the edge to finish off their opponent, but also it could offer a way to turn the tides of battle for those on the losing end. So, while dissimilar in many ways, the principle behind the mechanic is almost akin to the Clash System found in Injustice 2.

Of course, while it looks as if the inclusion of this system will make for some interesting combat in Dragon Ball FighterZ, pro players and fighting game purists will likely want the ability to turn the Shenron System off. Bandai Namco hasn’t officially declared that this can be done, but perhaps it will be an option once the title’s release date rolls around.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is set to release on January 26, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
