CD Projekt Red Has No Plans for The Witcher 4

CD Projekt Red fans holding out hope that the developer might one day return to the core Witcher franchise were dealt a serious blow this week. There may come a time when CD Projekt does go back to that world, but currently, it sounds like the adventures of Geralt of Rivia are concluded.

In a new interview, CD Projekt Red Co-Founder Adam Kicinski spoke openly about his studio’s projects. From Gwent to Cyberpunk 2077, Kicinski offered teases about the future of these titles and some introspective thoughts regarding their successes and failures.

But of course, the key focus was whether or not CD Projekt might ever deliver The Witcher 4, to which Kicinski gave a pretty definitive, “No.” As Kicinski explains, Geralt’s adventure was always envisioned as a trilogy and that trilogy concluded with the release of The Witcher 3 and its two expansions.

That being said, Kicinski wouldn’t rule out a return to the world of The Witcher, but those titles would likely be spin-offs. He acknowledges that fans (and investors) are desperate to see CD Projekt Red continue to play in The Witcher sandbox, so the book isn’t completely closed. The Witcher 4 might never come to pass, but something related to The Witcher could.

For many fans, The Witcher 3 was a fitting end to Geralt’s story and the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansion served as more playful adventures with the character. It was the best of both worlds: a send-off for the character and an opportunity to see him at his best.

But there will always be those that hope to see more of Geralt in the future and CD Projekt Red acknowledges that. Geralt is a very compelling character but his world is equally as interesting. So even a Witcher game without Geralt is sure to have a ton of buzz behind it. Moreover, the fans have a trust in CD Projekt Red – more so than most developers – to deliver something that is worthwhile.

In the meantime, CD Projekt Red is full steam ahead on Cyberpunk 2077, but no doubt the studio will take its time with the game. Much like The Witcher was a labor of love that needed time to come together, Cyberpunk appears to be a much bigger game that will require even more patience from the fan base.
