How Co-Op Works in Super Mario Odyssey

How Co-Op Works in Super Mario Odyssey

Another Nintendo Minute released this week that focuses on co-op play in Super Mario Odyssey. In the video, Kit and Krysta explore the Wooded Kingdom while demonstrating how two people can play together.

The controls for co-op mode are straightforward and work similarly to how they do in Super Mario Galaxy. Player one handles Mario, while player two controls his new friend Cappy independently. The difference between the two games is that the second player isn’t merely relegated to picking up star bits and coins, or stunning enemies.

In Super Mario Odyssey the second player is slightly more involved. While they can still gather items for player one, they can also interact with the environment, remove harmful hazards from the ground, and give an extra jump boost to Mario. One feature unique to co-op is the ability for Cappy to continue to move about the screen even after Mario has possessed an enemy. Check out the full video to see co-op in action.

Fans of the series are anxiously awaiting the next major Mario title, but the game’s demo has helped make the wait more tolerable. More hardcore fans have taken to speedrunning the demo to add a little extra challenge and prepare for the full game. Mario games have always attracted the attention of speedrunners, and it appears the new game will be no different.

There’s still one more week to go before Super Mario Odyssey releases and Nintendo is gearing up for launch with a myriad of promotional material, such as gaming previews on Nintendo Minute or that fabulous musical dance trailer. Even without the extra media, the consensus in the gaming world is that Super Mario Odyssey will be a fantastic game, much like its predecessors. Further supporting this assumption is a leaked review from EDGE magazine that gave the game a perfect score, which bodes well for fans who are anticipating an exemplary experience.

Super Mario Odyssey is slated to release on October 27, 2017 for Nintendo Switch.
